Turbo Lister Best Practices

To ensure your Turbo Lister runs reliably, there are certain best practices for both Turbo Lister and Windows. Follow the below directions

Turbo Lister

Do not kill Application

Many times Turbo Lister may appear to hang and the title or Windows Task Manager might say "Not responding". In fact there is a good chance that Turbo Lister is actually doing some cpu intensive work or is waiting for the network to respond. In such cases please wait for the operation to finish and do not kill Turbo Lister from the Task Manager  Killing Turbo Lister may cause database corruption to occur, which might eventually lead Turbo Lister to crash

Compact Database

It is a good idea to periodically compact the database (Tools -> Compact database). Compact database will shrink the database to the smallest size and will also throw away corrupted records

Make regular backups

Make regular backup of your database (File -> Backup Database...). It is recommended that you compact your database before you do the backup. The backup database is stored in the "My Documents\Turbo Lister Backup" folder and consist of the following files:

Just in case, you should also archive these two files to some other storage media (external hard disk, CD/DVD...)

Check for Updates

You should periodically check for Turbo Lister Updates (Tools -> Check for Program Updates). If you have not compacted your database for some time, then you should compact the database before checking for updates. Also, at least in the case of application updates, you should backup your database

Keep your Password current

When ever you change your eBay password on the site, please do the same on Turbo Lister. To change password on Turbo Lister use the following menu commands: Tools -> Options -> Personal Information -> eBay Account -> Change User ID or Password

Prune your Activity Log

For increased performance, delete entries from the Activity Log if these are not needed. After deleting the entries, compact the database

Windows

Windows Updates

Ensure you regularly take Windows updates. It is also recommended that you sign up for automatic updates.

To check for Windows update:

Windows XP and Lower
Launch Internet Explorer, Tools -> Check for Updates. If you can't find Internet Explorer then click Start button, Select  "Run ..." and in the Open text field,  enter iexplorer.exe and press enter

Windows Vista
Open Control Panel (Start -> Control Panel). Under Security Icon (non classic view), select "Check for Updates". If the Control Panel opens in classic view, then select Windows Updates

Spyware/Antivirus

Spyware/Antivirus can cause your system (including Turbo Lister) to misbehave or act very slow. It is recommended that you install an antispyware and antivirus programs that are current and regularly patched. Unfortunately there are classes of spyware that are difficult to remove and it is possible that there is no one single tool that can remove all kind of spyware. The users can try the following (all free) to remove spyware

Microsoft Windows defender
(This is built in Windows Vista)

Ad-aware
(Click on the Download Ad-aware free button)

Spybot Search&Destroy

Microsoft Malicious Software Removal
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

Microsoft One Care
(Also checks for Virus – normally requires a subscription but for now a free online scan version is available)

Even when running the above tools, not all the spyware might be removed. Advanced users should download Autoruns and Process Explorer from Microsoft http://www.sysinternals.com. Using them is complex but some information is available from this blog:
